1. An infarction caused by occlusion of a single penetrating artery.
2. A 62 year old man is found at home unable to stand. Initially he has a severe expressive and receptive dysphasia. Two weeks later he is able to communicate, but has a partial hemiparesis affecting his right side.
3. A 71 year old lady has ataxia, an intention tremor and dysarthria. She is able to communicate but her speech sounds staccato.
4. Usually associated with a vertebral artery occlusion. Ipsilaterally there may be Horners syndrome; contralaterally there may be loss of pain and temperature sensation.
5. A 50 year old lady presented to accident and emergency with a severe headache, photophobia and neck stiffness. A CT scan revealed blood in the sulci and ventricles of the brain. She died while in hospital.
